Know Your Leather Type Before Cleaning

Not all leather is the same, and using the wrong cleaning method can cause permanent damage. Before you clean anything, identify which type of leather your furniture is made from:

  • Finished (protected) leather: Has a uniform color, feels smooth, and water beads on the surface. This is the most common type and the easiest to clean.
  • Aniline (unfinished) leather: Has natural color variations and a soft, warm feel. Water absorbs immediately. This type is delicate and stains easily.
  • Nubuck and suede: Have a velvety, textured surface. These require specialized dry-cleaning methods only.

The water test: Place a single drop of water in an inconspicuous area. If it beads up, you have finished leather. If it absorbs and darkens the spot, you have aniline or unfinished leather. This determines your entire cleaning approach.

Cleaning Finished Leather

  1. Vacuum the furniture with a soft brush attachment to remove loose dirt and crumbs from seams and crevices
  2. Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, or use a few drops of mild liquid soap in warm water
  3. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution, wring thoroughly, and wipe the leather in gentle circular motions
  4. Immediately follow with a clean, damp cloth to remove any cleaning residue
  5. Dry with a soft, dry cloth — never use a hair dryer or place leather furniture near heat sources

Conditioning — The Step Most People Skip

Cleaning removes dirt but also strips some of the leather's natural oils. Conditioning replaces those oils and keeps the leather supple and crack-resistant. In Texas, where air conditioning removes moisture from indoor air for months at a time, conditioning is not optional.

  • Apply a leather conditioner after every cleaning session
  • Use a product specifically designed for your leather type — do not use generic moisturizers, coconut oil, or olive oil
  • Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and work it into the leather in circular motions
  • Let the conditioner absorb for 15 to 20 minutes, then buff off any excess with a dry cloth
  • Condition at minimum every three months, or monthly in dry air-conditioned environments

Handling Common Leather Stains

Ink Stains

Dab the stain with a cotton ball moistened with rubbing alcohol. Do not rub — blot gently from the outside in to prevent spreading. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

Grease and Oil

Blot excess grease with a clean cloth. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch over the stain, let it sit for several hours to absorb the oil, then brush off gently and wipe clean.

Water Stains

Dampen the entire panel evenly with a lightly wet cloth so the water mark blends into the surrounding area as it dries uniformly. Once dry, condition the area immediately.

When to Call a Professional

If your leather furniture has deep stains, cracking, peeling, or color loss, professional leather cleaning and restoration is the appropriate next step. Our couch and upholstery cleaning service uses pH-balanced leather treatments that clean and condition without risk to the finish. For everyday maintenance between professional visits, the techniques above will keep your leather looking its best for years.
