How to Clean Fabric and Microfiber Couches — Remove Stains and Odors

Elegant grey sofa with plush cushions in a contemporary living room setting.

Check the tag under your cushion before using any liquid. The wrong cleaner on an S-code couch leaves permanent rings.

Check the Cleaning Code First

Before you put any liquid on your couch, find the cleaning code tag — usually under a seat cushion or on the underside of the frame. This code tells you exactly what the fabric can tolerate.

  • W — Water-safe. Clean with water-based solutions.
  • S — Solvent only. Use dry-cleaning solvent, not water. Water will leave water rings.
  • WS — Either water or solvent is acceptable.
  • X — Vacuum only. No liquid cleaning.

This code is not a suggestion — it is a warning. Using water on an S-coded couch will create permanent water stains that are nearly impossible to remove. Many couches in North Houston homes are coded WS, which gives you the most flexibility.

How to Clean a W or WS Fabric Couch

General Cleaning

  1. Vacuum the entire couch with an upholstery attachment — get into seams, crevices, and under cushions where crumbs and pet hair accumulate.
  2. Mix a teaspoon of dish soap with a cup of warm water and whisk until sudsy.
  3. Use a clean white cloth to apply only the suds (not the liquid) to the fabric. Rub gently in circular motions.
  4. Blot with a second damp cloth to lift soap residue.
  5. Allow to air-dry completely. Point a fan at the couch to speed drying in our humid climate.

Stain Removal

For specific stains, act quickly. Blot — never rub — the spill with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible before it soaks in.

  • Coffee and tea: Blot, then apply a mix of one tablespoon white vinegar, one tablespoon dish soap, and two cups warm water
  • Red wine: Blot, sprinkle with salt to absorb, then apply club soda and blot again
  • Grease and oil: Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes to absorb the oil, then vacuum
  • Pet urine: Blot, apply an enzymatic cleaner (available at pet stores across Conroe, Spring, and The Woodlands), and let it dry naturally

How to Clean a Microfiber Couch

Microfiber is popular in North Houston family rooms because it is durable and pet-friendly. Most microfiber is S-coded, meaning water can leave marks. The professional method uses rubbing alcohol instead.

  1. Vacuum thoroughly to remove surface debris.
  2. Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl, 90 percent or higher).
  3. Spray a section of the couch lightly — work in small areas.
  4. Scrub with a white or light-colored cloth (colored cloths can transfer dye).
  5. Allow to dry completely — rubbing alcohol evaporates quickly even in our humidity.
  6. Fluff the dried microfiber with a soft-bristle brush to restore the texture.

Deodorizing Your Couch

Fabric couches absorb cooking odors, pet smells, and body oils over months. Baking soda is the simplest deodorizer.

  1. Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the entire couch.
  2. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes — overnight is even better.
  3. Vacuum thoroughly to remove all baking soda.

For persistent odors in homes across Humble, Porter, and New Caney — especially pet odors that have soaked deep into the cushion foam — household methods may not be enough. Professional upholstery cleaning with extraction equipment reaches the interior padding that surface treatments cannot.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about our cleaning services.

01

What should I expect during my first cleaning?

Your first clean is always our most thorough. We spend extra time on built-up areas, baseboards, and details that get overlooked over time. Before we arrive, we'll confirm the scope, any special requests, and access instructions. After the clean, we follow up to make sure everything meets your expectations. Most clients book their second cleaning before we even leave.

02

Will I get a walkthrough before the cleaning starts?

Yes. On your first visit, your team lead will do a quick walkthrough with you to understand your priorities, note any sensitive areas, and confirm the scope of work. This takes about 10 minutes and ensures we clean exactly to your expectations.

03

How long does a typical first cleaning take?

First cleanings usually take a bit longer than recurring visits because we are establishing a baseline for your home. After the initial clean, recurring visits are shorter and more efficient as your team already knows your space and preferences.
