For a compromise, decant only your top 15 most-used spices into matching jars with clear labels. Keep specialty and infrequent spices in their original packaging on a higher shelf.

Heat, light, and humidity are the enemies of spice freshness, and North Houston homes deal with all three. Store spices away from the stove — the cabinet directly above the stove is the worst possible location despite being the most common.
