Rust stains in sinks and bathtubs are a persistent problem in North Houston homes where well water or older plumbing leaves orange-brown marks. Learn the best removal methods for porcelain, acrylic, and stainless steel surfaces — and how to prevent rust from returning. SparkTex Cleaners serves homeowners across Conroe, The Woodlands, and beyond.
Where Rust Stains Come From in North Houston
Rust stains in sinks and bathtubs have two main sources in our area. First, iron-rich well water — especially common in rural parts of Conroe, Willis, Montgomery, and Magnolia where municipal water is not available. Second, older galvanized plumbing in mid-century homes that slowly corrodes and deposits rust particles into the water stream. Either way, the result is the same: ugly orange-brown streaks around drains, under faucets, and along the waterline of tubs.
The iron in the water oxidizes when exposed to air, creating iron oxide — rust. Once it bonds to a surface, it does not come off with normal bathroom cleaners. You need an acid-based approach that dissolves the iron oxide without damaging the fixture.
Method 1: Lemon and Salt (Gentle, Natural)
This is the safest starting point for most surfaces including porcelain and acrylic.
- Cut a lemon in half and squeeze juice directly onto the rust stain.
- Sprinkle a generous layer of table salt over the lemon juice.
- Let the combination sit for 2-3 hours. The citric acid dissolves the iron oxide while the salt provides gentle abrasion.
- Scrub with a soft brush or non-scratch sponge.
- Rinse thoroughly and repeat if the stain has lightened but not fully disappeared.
Method 2: White Vinegar Soak
Vinegar is more aggressive than lemon juice and works well on moderate rust stains.
- Soak paper towels in white vinegar and lay them directly over the rust stain.
- Let them sit for 1-2 hours, re-wetting the paper towels if they dry out.
- Remove the paper towels and scrub with a paste of baking soda and water.
- Rinse thoroughly.
Important: Do not use vinegar on natural stone, marble, or travertine surfaces. The acid will etch and damage the stone. Many North Houston bathrooms with travertine tub surrounds need a different approach — see our travertine cleaning guide.
Method 3: Bar Keepers Friend (Heavy-Duty)
For stubborn rust that has been building for months, Bar Keepers Friend (the powder version) is the most effective over-the-counter solution. Its active ingredient, oxalic acid, dissolves rust aggressively.
- Wet the stained surface.
- Sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend powder onto the stain.
- Make a paste with a damp sponge and apply to the stain.
- Let it sit for 1-2 minutes only — do not leave it longer on porcelain or acrylic.
- Scrub gently and rinse thoroughly.
Preventing Rust Stains
- Install a whole-house water filter or iron filter if you are on well water — common recommendation for homes in Willis, Montgomery, and rural Conroe
- Dry sinks and tubs after each use to prevent iron in the water from oxidizing on the surface
- Remove metal cans (shaving cream, air freshener) from the shower and tub ledges — the metal ring on the bottom rusts and transfers to the surface
- Fix leaky faucets immediately — a constant drip creates a concentrated rust stain at the impact point
- Replace old galvanized pipes with PEX or copper during your next renovation
