Standard cleaners mask or temporarily neutralize odors. Enzymatic cleaners actually break down the uric acid crystals in pet urine — the source of the persistent smell that survives standard cleaning.

1. Saturate affected carpet areas with enzymatic cleaner — it needs to reach the same depth as the original urine
2. Cover treated areas with plastic sheeting to keep the enzyme active and prevent evaporation
3. Allow 24-48 hours for the enzymes to work — this is not a quick fix
4. Blot up remaining moisture and allow to fully dry
5. Repeat for severe stains that have soaked into the carpet padding

When Carpet Replacement Is Necessary

If urine has reached the subfloor beneath the carpet padding, no amount of cleaning will fully eliminate the odor. The subfloor itself must be sealed with a shellac-based primer before new carpet is installed.

Beyond Carpets — Full Home Deodorization

• Wash all hard floors with enzymatic cleaner, including grout lines
• Wipe down all baseboards and lower walls with an enzyme solution
• Clean or replace HVAC filters and have ducts professionally cleaned
• Wash all window treatments — curtains absorb pet odors over time
• Clean upholstered furniture or remove it before showings

Air Quality Restoration

• Run HEPA air purifiers in affected rooms for at least 48 hours after cleaning
• Open all windows for cross-ventilation on a dry day
• Place bowls of baking soda in rooms to absorb residual odors
• Consider an ozone treatment for severe cases — but only in an unoccupied home
