PCS Cleaning Is Not Regular Move-Out Cleaning

Military families stationed at or near bases in the greater Houston area know that PCS move-out cleaning is a different beast from civilian apartment cleaning. Housing offices have standardized checklists that are far more detailed than anything a private landlord would require. Failing inspection means a callback — and with the compressed timeline of a PCS move, callbacks create serious stress.

Common Inspection Failures

1. Oven and range hood. The oven interior must be free of any baked-on residue. The range hood filter must be degreased or replaced. This is the most common failure point.

2. Refrigerator interior. Every shelf, drawer, and seal must be spotless. Pull out shelves and wash them individually.

3. Window tracks and blinds. Inspectors run a finger along window tracks. Any visible dust or debris is a fail.

4. Bathroom grout and caulking. Mold or discoloration in grout and caulking is flagged. Re-caulking may be required.

5. Baseboards and door frames. Dust, scuff marks, and pet damage on baseboards are caught during walkthroughs.

The Military Move-Out Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen

1. Clean oven interior, racks, broiler pan, and drip pans.
2. Degrease range hood and filter.
3. Clean refrigerator interior, exterior, and coils underneath.
4. Run dishwasher empty and clean the filter and interior.
5. Wipe all cabinet interiors, counters, backsplash, and sink.

Bathrooms

1. Scrub all tile and grout with a mildew-removing cleaner.
2. Clean toilet inside and out, including the base and tank.
3. Wipe the medicine cabinet interior and vanity drawers.
4. Clean the exhaust fan cover — remove and wash it.

All Rooms

1. Dust and wipe all ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vent covers.
2. Clean all window glass, sills, tracks, and screens.
3. Wipe all baseboards, door frames, switch plates, and outlet covers.
4. Patch nail holes and ensure walls are clean.
5. Vacuum carpet thoroughly — steam clean if required by housing office.
