How to Clean and Maintain Wood Cabinets — Kitchen and Bathroom Guide

Cabinet Finishes Vary — Your Cleaning Should Too

North Houston kitchens run the gamut from stained solid wood in traditional Conroe ranch homes to painted MDF in modern Woodlands townhouses to thermofoil in budget-friendly Spring apartments. Each finish has different tolerances for moisture, chemicals, and abrasion. Using the wrong approach can strip stain, dull paint, or peel thermofoil. Knowing what you have is the first step.

Check the inside of a cabinet door — builders often leave a label or you can see the raw material. Solid wood has visible grain on the edges. MDF is smooth and uniform. Thermofoil is a vinyl wrap that feels plastic-like.

Cleaning Stained Wood Cabinets

Regular Maintenance (Weekly)

Mix a few drops of dish soap into a bowl of warm water. Dip a microfiber cloth, wring it until barely damp, and wipe cabinet surfaces. Follow immediately with a dry cloth. Never let water sit on stained wood — it penetrates the grain and causes swelling, warping, and white water marks.

Grease Removal (Monthly)

Kitchen cabinets near the stove develop a greasy film that attracts dust. Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar, spray onto a cloth (never directly on the cabinet), and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. For heavy grease, add a drop of dish soap to the vinegar solution.

  1. Start with cabinets above and beside the stove — these get the worst grease exposure.
  2. Work down to lower cabinets and handles.
  3. Dry each surface immediately after wiping.
  4. Apply a wood-safe furniture polish or oil once a quarter to restore moisture and luster.

Cleaning Painted Cabinets

Painted cabinets are popular in newer homes across Cypress, Tomball, and The Woodlands. The paint provides a sealed surface that is somewhat more forgiving than stained wood, but aggressive scrubbing or harsh chemicals can still damage the finish.

  • Use warm water and mild dish soap only — avoid anything abrasive
  • Wipe with a soft sponge, not a scrub pad. Magic Erasers are too abrasive for painted surfaces
  • Clean scuff marks with a dab of baking soda paste applied gently with a soft cloth
  • Dry thoroughly — water running down painted cabinet doors collects at the bottom edge and causes peeling

Never use all-purpose cleaners with bleach or ammonia on painted cabinets. They strip the sheen and cause yellowing on white paint over time.

Cleaning Thermofoil and Laminate Cabinets

Thermofoil cabinets use a vinyl wrap applied to MDF with heat. They are common in apartments and builder-grade kitchens throughout Spring, Humble, and New Caney. The vinyl is waterproof, but the seams and edges are vulnerable — water that seeps under the film causes it to separate and bubble.

  • Clean with warm water and dish soap — thermofoil handles most mild cleaners well
  • Avoid excessive heat near thermofoil (do not position a toaster or air fryer too close)
  • Never use adhesive removers or solvents — they dissolve the vinyl
  • Inspect edges and seams periodically for peeling. Early repair prevents the need for full replacement

Cabinet Hardware

Knobs and pulls collect grease and grime at the contact points. Remove them twice a year and soak in warm soapy water for 10 minutes. Scrub with an old toothbrush, dry, and reinstall. Chrome and brushed nickel are the most common hardware finishes in North Houston — both clean easily with this method.

Inside the Cabinets

Cabinet interiors collect crumbs, spilled liquids, and stale odors over time. Line shelves with washable shelf liner — it protects the surface and makes cleanup easy. Wipe interiors every three months with warm soapy water and let them air-dry with doors open before restocking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about our cleaning services.

01

What should I expect during my first cleaning?

Your first clean is always our most thorough. We spend extra time on built-up areas, baseboards, and details that get overlooked over time. Before we arrive, we'll confirm the scope, any special requests, and access instructions. After the clean, we follow up to make sure everything meets your expectations. Most clients book their second cleaning before we even leave.

02

What if I am not happy with the first cleaning?

Our 100% satisfaction guarantee covers your very first cleaning. If anything does not meet your standards, contact us within 24 hours and we will send a team back to address it at no additional cost — no questions asked.

03

How long does a typical first cleaning take?

First cleanings usually take a bit longer than recurring visits because we are establishing a baseline for your home. After the initial clean, recurring visits are shorter and more efficient as your team already knows your space and preferences.
